A massive, five alarm fire burned through a vacant school in Trenton Monday afternoon.

The blaze broke out in the vacant Martin Luther King Jr. School, formerly known as Junior High School #1, which is located in 800 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in front of the new new Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, a Trenton Police spokesman told NJ Advance Media.

As of 9 p.m., the fire was contained within the structure but not before some embers spread to homes on nearby Evans Avenue, officials said. There was no significant damage to any of the other buildings and residents were expected to return home once operations at the site were complete, police said. Crews were expected to remain on scene throughout the night.

A portion of the building’s roof collapsed during suppression efforts, but it was unclear exactly how badly damaged the structure was, authorities said.

One firefighter suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the spokesman said.

New Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School did not sustain any damage and students were dismissed from there on schedule, school officials said.
